What is a Pentecostal Church?

Pentecost was the event in the New Testament when Jesus’ disciples were baptised in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4) as promised in the Great Commission ( Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15-18, Acts 1:8). This experience of the Holy Spirit in their lives exhibited itself in a supernatural ability to bear witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ as well as signs, wonders and miracles (The New Testament book of Acts describes clearly the work of the early church – see also 1 Corinthians chapters 12, 13 and 14).

Pentecostal churches are groups of Christians that believe and experience that outpouring in the 21 st century. Throughout church history there have been groups of believers that have experienced the reality of this baptism. The modern ‘outpouring’ commenced in what is commonly known as the “Asuza Street Revival” in Los Angeles on April 9 th 1906.

Since then many Pentecostal church organisations have come into being, one of the largest of these groups is the Assemblies of God of which Immanuel Christian Centre is a part. Today we are part of the fast-growing group of Christians known as Pentecostals who today number well over 500 million world-wide.
